Car Audio Systems What Kind of Battery? Keeping You Cool Keeping Your Engine Cool Cruise Home

For those of you out there with 6 volt cars we would recommend in virtually all cases converting to a 12 volt system for the following reasons.

First of all you will get fast and easy starting with generally no modifications to your current starter. -- Remember, 6 volt wiring is a much larger gauge and is more than adequate to carry 12 volts. -- Also most 6 volt starters will operate sucessfully on 12 volts, just remember not to stress the starter any more than necessary. --If your car is hard to start, or just needs to be cranked to pump fuel to the carb, then run the starter for about 10 seconds at most and let it rest for at least as long before trying again. --Since the starter turns much faster on 12 volts it shouldn't take many trys to get going.

If you want to run any kind of modern radio or air conditioning system, then a 12 volt system is virtually a must. --I wouldn't recommend any of the 6-12 volt converters since they are expensive, hard to find, unreliable, and make a nasty buzzing sound, both the box itself and in your speakers! --If this were not bad enough there is also the problem that converters make only enough power to run a very low power radio.-- Virtually all decent radios on the market today are high power and will operate very poorly on a converter. --The same applys for CB radios, except that actually trying to transmit is out of the question.

For possibly the best compromise check out the new 6/12 volt batteries now available.-- These systems promise the right voltage for all components at a lower cost than a full 12 volt conversion.-- Stay tuned!
