There are three steps to keeping cool in your car.

The first is to move as much air as possible througn the car.-- Although the traditional way to get cool is to roll down the windows and drive as fast as possible the noise and wind take a lot of the fun out of cruising. -- Air conditioning is the best solution by far to keeping cool, as it reduces the humidity in the air in addition to cooling it. -- But it also has some disadvantages such as cost, about $1000 in parts and about that much again in installation and charging. -- Most air conditioning installations ruin the styling and originality of your interior and engine compartment too. -- A good way to keep cool is to use an old fashioned fan like that in the Mr Cool kit which has the advantage of cooling you even when you are stuck at a traffic light. -- One of the best ways to get better airflow through your old car is to never open the "vent" windows if your car has them. -- This goes against common knowledge but is not hard to disprove since the vent window was actually invented to keep rain from coming into the interior. -- Just as a racing spoiler diverts the airstream, the vent window pushes the airflow out from the body, reducing the amount of air flowing through the interior by 30% or more. -- On a short roof style like a three window coupe or sports car the air flow can be cut off almost entirely by an open vent window. -- Test it yourself by holding a piece of paper at the rear of the window opening and you can clearly see the difference in flow. -- Unfortunately we are all conditioned to equate more noise with more airflow so the roar from those "vent" wndows will continue to fool most people forever.

The second best way to be cooler in your car is to turn your heater off! -- On most old cars hot water passes through the heater core all the time. -- Instead of just turning off the flow of air through this box of boiling water why not get rid of it and convert it into a cool air ventilation system. -- See our Mr Cool system for more details on how to make a power ventilation system at almost no expense.

And the third best way to stay cool is to stay out of the sun. -- Just having a roof over your head will do the job usually, with the exception of morning and evening sun that gets you through the side window.--Another trick in the Mr Cool kit is a sheet of static cling tint that is temporarily stuck on the side window to eliminate this problem.
